This course covers the knowledge and skills to contribute to a culture of safety and uphold child-safe standards in your workplace.
1. Identifying Children and Young People at Risk
Build the observational and contextual skills to recognise when a child or young person may be at risk, including:
- Signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect, including physical indicators and disclosure
- Understanding forms of harm, including sexual abuse, domestic and family violence and child-on-child abuse, and what constitutes significant harm
- Risk factors and protective factors across a child’s life, from pre-natal risk through to adolescence, including parental circumstances that may increase vulnerability
- How risk and resilience present differently across age, gender, disability, culture and sexuality
- Barriers children face in disclosing abuse, and how these barriers affect wellbeing
2. Reporting Children and Young People at Risk
Understand exactly what to do once risk is identified, and the legislative requirements that shape your response:
- Mandatory reporting: who is a mandatory reporter, and the reporting procedures and reporting protocols that apply under your state or territory legislation
- Key child protection laws, including the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005, Section 162A, and the National Quality Standard (NQS) and Regulation 84, relevant to persons in day-to-day charge, nominated supervisors and family day care coordinators
- Responding to disclosures using strengths-based approaches, including the use of open questions and direct questions
- Non-judgmental report writing and post-incident responsibilities
- Confidentiality, privacy and information-sharing in line with organisational policies and procedures

Prerequisites
- hold a Certificate III or Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care, or
- be currently working towards one of these qualifications, or
- hold a higher-level qualification relevant to early childhood education and care
Entry Requirements
- Learner must be employed in the early childhood education and care sector and work directly with children.
- Learner must have sufficient digital literacy and access to a computer and internet
