CHC30121 to CHC30125: What’s Changing and What It Means

Monday, October 12, 2026

If you’ve looked into the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care lately, you may have spotted a new qualification code: CHC30125. This has replaced the older code, CHC30121, across the training sector.

A new number can look like a big deal. In this case, it’s a small, targeted update. In this article, we explain exactly what’s changed, why it changed, and what it means depending on where you are in your study journey.

What Is Actually Changing?

The change between CHC30121 and CHC30125 comes down to one core unit. The old unit, “Identify and respond to children and young people at risk (CHCPRT001)”, has been replaced with a new version, “Identify and report children and young people at risk (CHCPRT025)”. This is the main change to the qualification. Every other “core unit” has remained the same.

Why Did This Unit Change?

This update is part of a wider, national update to training packages. The goal was to strengthen educators’ knowledge and practical skills around child protection, so it better reflects current expectations for keeping children safe. It’s a small change on paper, but an important one, since it reflects how seriously the sector takes child safety and reporting.

Why Do Training Packages Change At All?

Nationally recognised qualifications are reviewed and updated from time to time to ensure they remain relevant to industry needs, legislation and current workplace practices. These updates are a normal part of Australia’s vocational education and training system, not something specific to Practical Outcomes.

Is My Current Qualification Still Valid?

Yes. If you hold a CHC30121 qualification, it remains fully valid and nationally recognised. You don’t need to upgrade, redo any units, or take any extra steps. Your qualification still does everything it was always meant to do.

What If I’m Partway Through My Course Right Now?

As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), we are committed to supporting you to complete your qualification in a timely manner, in line with national training requirements.

If you’re currently enrolled in CHC30121, you can keep going and finish under that same code.  There’s no requirement to switch partway through, and no deadline pushing you to change qualifications mid-course.

What If I’m About to Enrol?

If you’re considering enrolling in the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, we will confirm which version of the qualification is available at the time of your enrolment.

If anything changes, we’ll guide you through what it means for you directly, rather than leaving you to work it out from a course code alone.

Does This Affect Credit Transfers?

In most cases, core units you’ve already completed from CHC30121 will be recognised the same way under CHC30125. The one exception is the child protection unit, as it’s been replaced and no longer exists in its old form.

Elective units may vary between training providers, so the electives you completed elsewhere may not always line up with the ones offered in our course. If you’re unsure how this applies to you, our team is happy to look at your specific situation and let you know what can be carried over.

What Should Employers Know?

If you employ early childhood educators, you don’t need to do anything differently because of this update. Staff who hold a CHC30121 qualification remain fully qualified for their role. If a staff member is partway through their course with Practical Outcomes, they can simply continue as enrolled.

A Quick Recap

  • Only one core unit has changed.
  • The update strengthens skills and knowledge relevant to child protection, safeguarding and reporting.
  • CHC30121 qualifications remain valid, no need to upgrade simply because the code has changed.
  • There’s no rush and no deadline attached to this change.
  • If you have questions, our team is the best place to ask.
