If you’re returning to study after a gap year or even after time away for parenting, travel or other life commitments, study might seem like a big task. But with the right trainer and support, you’ve got this!
There’s no “right” way to approach studying. Some people get stuck into a course right after graduating from high school, while others wait a year or more before commencing studying. In other situations, you might study one thing, head into the workforce, then decide to study again. Maybe you had a year away exploring the world or a few years of being a mum or dad full time?
Whatever your personal reasons are for having not studied in a while, we’ve got some hot tips to make the adjustment to study after a gap year (or a few years) as smooth as possible.
- Choose your trainer carefully
Make sure your RTO understands your needs and can deliver the right support to meet those needs. A trainer willing to give you guidance is invaluable, especially when you might need some extra help settling into study mode.
- Create a schedule/timetable
Getting into a new routine that allocates time for everything you need to do will give you the best chance of success. Put a schedule or timetable together that shows you visually exactly how you can fit everything in.
- Make time for you
Don’t just fill your days with study, work and errands — set aside some time for doing things that make you happy. This could be reading, hitting the gym, catching up with friends or anything else that you enjoy.
- Find a study environment
When it comes to tackling assignments and books you need a space that is distraction-free. Of course, it’s also important to find what works best for you. For example, while some people enjoy studying with the music on, others need complete quiet. Either way, plenty of good light and a comfortable place to sit are a must.
